First Ride: The 2026 Canyon Spectral:ON More Juice, More Send

TL;DR: The King of the Mullets gets a bigger heart.

The Canyon Spectral:ON has always been the "fun" e-MTB in the lineup. Its poppy, its agile, and it loves a mullet (29" front / 27.5" rear). For 2026, Canyon hasn't messed with the formula they've just given it significantly more range and a smarter brain.

What you get

The headline act is the new 800Wh battery. Its a custom unit from Darfon that slides into the downtube, giving you almost 20% more range than the previous 725Wh pack. Its still paired with the Shimano EP801 motor, which delivers a punchy 85Nm of torque and some of the best natural-feeling power delivery on the market.

  • Motor: Shimano EP801 (85Nm)
  • Battery: 800Wh Darfon (Removable)
  • Travel: 160mm Front / 155mm Rear
  • Weight: ~24.5kg (CF 8)
  • Price: Starting from ~$3,899 USD

How it rides

On the trail, the Spectral:ON remains one of the most playful e-bikes we've tested. The shorter chainstays (thanks to that 27.5" rear wheel) make it a dream to flick through tight corners and manual off every little feature. It doesn't feel like a "heavy" e-bike once you're moving.

The new battery does add a tiny bit of weight down low, but the EP801 motor compensates for it with ease. Climbing is a breeze, especially in the high-cadence "Boost" mode which feels more refined than ever.

Weak spots

If were being picky, the internal cable routing through the headset is still a bit of a pain for home mechanics. And while the 800Wh battery is great for range, it makes the bike feel a bit more "planted" and slightly less "jumpy" than the older 630Wh versions.

The Smart Move

If you're buying the Spectral:ON, the stock cockpit is "fine," but an e-bike this capable deserves better leverage and more comfort for those long, 800Wh sessions.

Upgrade Tip: Swap the stock bars for a wider WAKE Alloy Riser and some Bucklos Lock-On Grips. Itll give you way more control when you're wrestling 24kg of bike through the tech.

Verdict: 9/10

Canyon hasn't reinvented the wheel here they've just polished one of the best e-MTB platforms on the market. If you want a bike that can handle 2000m of climbing in a single ride and still feel like a play-bike on the way down, the Spectral:ON 2026 is hard to beat.
