Tropical Megaproject: Smithfield Scores $15.5M for Massive 85km Expansion

The tropical rainforests of Cairns are about to get a whole lot faster. The Queensland Government has officially unlocked a massive $15.5 million investment to expand the iconic Smithfield Mountain Bike Park into an 85-kilometre world-class trail network.

Smithfield is already legendary—it has hosted World Cups, World Championships, and is the absolute heartbeat of riding in Far North Queensland. But with a network currently sitting at around 30 kilometres, it was time for a major upgrade. This new multi-million dollar master plan, developed in collaboration with World Trail and Contour Works, is set to nearly triple the park's trail count by 2028.

What is coming to the jungle?

This isn't just a bit of trail maintenance. We're talking about a complete redesign and expansion that will make Smithfield a nationally significant gravity and trail hub:

  • Massive Trail Expansion: Building out to 85 kilometres of pure singletrack, cutting through the steep, tropical hillside of Cairns.
  • All-Weather Refurbishment: Upgrading existing trails to handle the brutal tropical wet seasons, ensuring the park stays open and drains perfectly year-round.
  • Ergonomic Flow & Tech: A mixture of high-speed machine-built flow trails and raw, off-camber root gardens that will test even the most experienced racers.

Riding in the wet, humid jungle of Far North Queensland is extremely demanding on both the rider and the bike. Slick clay, slick roots, and high humidity mean you need components that offer absolute confidence and zero slip.
