Three enduro riders in colourful kits ripping a fast bermed corner with the Victorian high country behind them

Australia’s Best Stage Race Series Just Got A Massive Glow-Up — The 2026 Quad Events Calendar

Quad Events just rewrote the playbook for Australian stage racing. The 4-race series is gone, replaced by two destination weekends — Mystic Yack in Bright and Black Pearl in Newcastle — both running three full stages instead of the old Prelude-plus-weekend format. The Black Pearl entries are about to open. If you've ever thought about doing a multi-day MTB race, this is the year.

The new format — and why it's a banger

For years, Quad Events ran a 4-race series across Australia. Solid concept, but spreading the rider experience across four mid-sized events meant nothing ever hit "destination event" status. The new 2026 model fixes that:

  • Two events only — concentrated focus, both legitimate destination weekends
  • Three full stages each — no more Friday Prelude. Proper full-stage racing Friday through Sunday
  • Full course AND short course options each day — same race weekend, two distance choices, rolling start groups, no excuses
  • Iconic Aussie locations — Victorian alpine high country in autumn, Hunter coast in spring

This is the format upgrade Aussie stage racing has been waiting for. The Port to Port crew (same management team as Quad Events) basically wrote the book on Australian multi-day MTB racing, and now they're going all-in on doing two events properly instead of four events okay.

Event 1 — The Mystic Yack (already wrapped)

When: 13-15 March 2026
Where: Bright, Victorian high country
Trails: Indigo Epic Trail network + Mystic Mountain Bike Park

The Yack already went down in March and the consensus was clear — best Mystic Yack ever. Bright in autumn is just unfair. Tacky dirt, cool mornings, golden afternoon light through the eucalyptus, and a town built around bikes and craft beer.

The three-stage format made the weekend feel like a proper destination race instead of a stretched-out series stop. Stage 1 used the Indigo Epic gravel-meets-trail network with serious climbing and ridgeline views. Stage 2 brought riders into the heart of Mystic for proper bike park terrain — flow trails, technical descents, and the new intermediate jump trail that opened earlier this summer. Stage 3 closed it out with an enduro-style descent format that had riders grinning even in the recovery zone.

If you missed it, that's painful. But you've still got time to lock in the Black Pearl.

Event 2 — The Black Pearl (entries opening soon)

When: 6-8 November 2026
Where: Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, NSW
Trails: Many of the iconic Port to Port stages, reimagined for the new format

The Black Pearl is the headline act for the second half of 2026. Newcastle has been quietly building one of Australia's most diverse trail networks for years — Glenrock, Awaba, the Watagans, and the broader Hunter region offer everything from coastal pump-track-style flow to proper hill country backcountry.

The race uses many of the trails made famous by Port to Port, which means the terrain is already proven for stage racing. Lake Macquarie in November is also one of the best weather windows of the Aussie calendar — warm but not melting, dry trails, long evening light, and the coast 5 minutes from the race village.

Three full stages, full course or short course each day, racing across the most underrated trail region in Australia. This event is going to sell out hard.

Why stage racing should be on your 2026 list

If you've only ever ridden enduro or XC single-day events, stage racing is a whole different sport. A few reasons it's worth doing at least once:

  1. Real race fitness — three back-to-back race days expose every weakness in your training. The kind of pain you only get from proper multi-day racing.
  2. Race-weekend culture — race village in the morning, recovery beers in the afternoon, finish-line stories in the evening. The community is incredible.
  3. Destination racing — both venues are world-class places to spend a week. Add a few days either side of the race and you've got a proper bike holiday.
  4. Approachable format — short course option means you don't need to be a pro to enter. Most riders sit comfortably in mid-pack.
  5. Real medals, real podiums — overall winners, age category winners, daily stage winners. Plenty of glory to go around.

How to prep for a stage race

Three-day stage racing isn't a one-day event with extra credit. It's a different beast. Three things separate the riders who finish strong from the ones who blow up on day two:

  1. Back-to-back training rides. Don't just train for one big day. Train for three medium-big days in a row. Your body needs to learn how to recover overnight.
  2. Bike reliability. No mechanical equals no race. A mid-stage breakdown ends your weekend. Service your bike 3-4 weeks before the event so everything is run-in. Pack spare brake pads, a spare derailleur hanger, a tubeless plug kit, and a fresh chain.
  3. Comfort wins. Stock cockpit components were chosen to hit a price point, not to feel great on day three. Two upgrades pay for themselves in stage racing — tacky grips that don't tear up your palms after 6 hours, and pedals with proper pin grip that don't slip when your legs are jelly.

The smart upgrade move before race weekend

Don't show up to a stage race on a tired cockpit. Three small upgrades that change how the bike feels at hour 5 of day 3:

  • Bucklos Lock-On Grips — tacky compound, single-clamp design, way more comfortable than the OEM rubbish on most bikes. The single most underrated stage-race upgrade.
  • ENLEE Enduro Flat Pedals — wide platform, proper pin grip, sealed bearings that survive grit and creek crossings. If you're a flat-pedal rider this is the move.
  • WAKE Alloy Riser Handlebar — wider bars give you proper control on day-three legs. Steering precision matters more when you're tired.
  • Bucklos B01S brake pads — pack a spare set in your race kit. Three days of descents will roast a tired pad.

Get on it

The Mystic Yack is done for 2026 — bookmark it for next March. The Black Pearl entries open shortly at quadcrownmtb.com.au and historically sell out fast. Newcastle in November is unbeatable. Three days of racing on world-class trails with a community that genuinely makes the weekend feel like a festival.

If you've been waiting for a sign to enter your first stage race, this is it. Lock it in. Train smart. Show up with a fresh cockpit. Go finish your first multi-day race.
