Four in a Row: Luke Meier-Smith Makes MTB History at Mt Buller Nationals 2026
Some results you see coming. This wasn't one of them — and that's exactly what makes it legendary.
At the 2026 GWM Mountain Bike National Championships at Mt Buller, Luke Meier-Smith did what no one else in Australian MTB history has done: he clinched his fourth consecutive elite men's downhill national title, equalling the all-time records of Troy Brosnan and Tracey Hannah. Two icons. One record. Now shared by three.
That's not a dynasty. That's a dynasty with interest on top.
The Run That Made History
Meier-Smith crossed the line in 2:53.907 — fast enough to hold off a stacked field on one of Australia's most demanding downhill tracks. Jackson Connelly pushed him hardest, finishing second in 2:55.439, with Zac Bradley rounding out the podium in 2:56.439.
The margin at the top was barely 1.5 seconds. On terrain like Mt Buller's national champs course — raw, relentless, and punishing on every line choice — that gap represents absolute mastery.
Troy Brosnan, widely considered the biggest threat to the streak, was taken out of contention by a rear puncture on course. The mountain giveth and the mountain taketh away.
Sick, Tired & Still Fastest on the Hill
Here's the detail that makes this even more absurd: Meier-Smith was fighting off a flu the night before his title run.
"I came down with a bit of a flu last night that definitely didn't help me," he said after the finish. "It's such a physical track you just got to work for your speed. Definitely had a few loose moments but kept it together well enough to come out on top."
Sick. Loose. Still fastest. The man is built different.
Junior Men: Turkovic Nails It by Less Than a Second
The junior men's race was even tighter — less than a second separating the entire podium.
- 🥇 Daniel Turkovic – 3:00.000
- 🥈 Jonte Tummon – 3:00.294
- 🥉 Oliver Colthup – 3:00.792
Turkovic hit a perfect 3:00.000 dead on the clock — and with that kind of precision at junior level, he's one to watch for years to come.
Mt Buller Delivered
The 2026 GWM Nationals week was everything the Australian MTB scene needed. Clear skies, trails in prime condition, Northside Express running continuous uplift, and racing that had spectators losing their minds at every split. The village atmosphere was electric, with riders and fans filling every corner of the resort across five days of competition spanning DH, XCO, XCC, Team Relay, E-MTB and Adaptive disciplines.
This is what Australian mountain biking looks like when it's firing on all cylinders. Hold onto that feeling — the next chapter is already being written.
Keep Your Rig Ready for Whatever Comes Next
Watching the nationals always has the same effect: you want to get out and ride harder. Make sure your cockpit is locked in before you do. Tight stem, quality grips that don't rotate under load, and pedals that actually grip through the chunky stuff.
