Cairns Comes Out Swinging — XCO Nationals Round 1 Kicks Off the 2026 Series
The 2026 AusCycling Mountain Bike National Series is officially underway. Round 1 dropped in Cairns over the weekend, and tropical north Queensland delivered exactly what you'd expect — sweltering humidity, slick red clay, and a field deep enough to make every lap a war.
Why Cairns matters
For years the XCO season opener has bounced around the country, but Cairns has quietly become the spiritual home of Aussie cross-country racing. Smithfield's purpose-built XCO loop is technical, twisty, and unforgiving — short, savage climbs that punish anyone who paces it wrong, and descents through tropical rainforest that demand line choice and committed bike handling. It's a course that rewards complete riders, not just the strongest set of legs.
And in May? The conditions are brutal. 28-32°C with humidity that climbs over 80% by mid-morning. Hydration strategy isn't a nice-to-have, it's the difference between a podium and a DNF.
The opener that sets the tone
Round 1 is always more than just a race. It's the first read on who's done their winter homework, which juniors have stepped up to elite, and which European-based pros have flown home to defend their national stripes. Every rider on the start line knows that points banked in Cairns carry through the entire series — and a strong opener buys you breathing room when later rounds get dicey.
The depth of the elite men's and women's fields this year is properly impressive. The U17 and U19 categories — the engine room of Aussie XC — looked stacked, with a handful of names already worth circling for the next few seasons.
What we're watching this season
- The Crankworx crossover: Aussie gravity riders like Luke Meier-Smith have been flying internationally. Will the XC contingent step up to match that energy on the world stage?
- The junior pipeline: Watch the U19 results. Australia has consistently produced world-class XC juniors, and a few of them are about to make the elite jump.
- The new course rotations: The 2026 series visits Bright, Mt Stromlo, and Maydena before wrapping up — every venue brings a different test.
- The e-MTB category: AusCycling's e-MTB nationals are quietly growing. This year's fields are the deepest yet.
For the rest of us riding at home
Watching Nationals always inspires the part of your brain that says "I should ride more." Good news — you don't need a $12,000 carbon race bike to chase that feeling. A solid trail bike, a properly set-up cockpit, and a few weekends of structured riding will do more for your speed than any frame upgrade.
Need fitness motivation? Pick a local race. Anything from a club XCO round to a 50km marathon. Having a date on the calendar transforms how often you actually train.
Need a bike that's race-capable without the carbon price tag? Our Gear Garage buyer's guides cover the best options at every price point from $1,500 up.
Need to sharpen your bike before the next ride? Sort the cockpit. A wider WAKE Alloy Riser Bar, sticky Bucklos Lock-On Grips, and a set of ENLEE Enduro Flat Pedals will sharpen handling and confidence on every ride from XCO laps to bike park days.
Round 2 looms
The series moves on quickly. The next round arrives before riders have fully unpacked from Cairns, and the form lines from this opener will get tested fast.
