Review: The 2026 Trek Fuel EX 8 Gen 6 - The Swiss Army Knife of Trail Bikes

The Verdict: The most versatile, highly-adjustable aluminium trail bike on the market—but it carries a bit of extra weight.

The Trek Fuel EX has long been the "safe choice" for mountain bikers looking for a reliable trail companion. For 2026, the Gen 6 Fuel EX 8 continues this legacy but completely redefines what is possible at the mid-range price point. Built with an incredibly robust Alpha Platinum Aluminium frame, this bike offers an unprecedented level of geometry adjustability and suspension tuning that makes it a true Swiss Army Knife on the trail.

What you get

The spec sheet on the Fuel EX 8 represents excellent real-world value. Trek has prioritized high-quality suspension components over carbon frames, choosing a buttery smooth Fox Rhythm 36 fork and a hard-hitting Fox Performance Float X rear shock. Combined with a robust Shimano XT/SLX 12-speed drivetrain and dependable Shimano 4-piston brakes, this bike is built to take a beating.

  • Fork: Fox Rhythm 36 Float EVOL (GRIP damper, 150mm)
  • Shock: Fox Performance Float X (140mm)
  • Drivetrain: Shimano XT M8100 / SLX 12-speed
  • Brakes: Shimano Deore M6120 4-piston hydraulic disc
  • Weight: ~15.6 kg (Size Large)
  • Price: ~$5,499 AUD

How it rides

The standout feature of the Gen 6 Fuel EX is its composure on technical trails. The Fox Float X rear shock provides exceptional mid-stroke support, meaning the 140mm of rear travel feels much deeper and more capable than it actually is. It climbs with active traction, clawing its way up loose, rocky fire roads with absolute ease.

But the real magic lies in the adjustability. Thanks to Trek's Mino Link flip chip and an adjustable headset angle cup, you can easily transform the bike from a steep, snappy local trail cruiser into a slack, low-slung, mullet-wheel-compatible enduro machine. It gives the rider complete control over how their bike behaves on any given day.

Weak spots

The only major trade-off here is the weight. At 15.6 kg for a size Large, the Fuel EX 8 is on the heavier side for a mid-travel trail bike. On tight, technical climbs or long fire-road grinds, you will feel that extra aluminium mass. Additionally, the stock Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels are bulletproof but heavy, and the stock Bontrager tyres can feel a bit slick and unpredictable on wet, greasy trails.

The Smart Move

Trek has built an incredible chassis, but the stock cockpit is functional yet basic. Swapping out the heavy, generic bar and stem is the fastest way to drop some cockpit weight and add custom "trail bling" to your ride.

Upgrade your Fuel EX:

Verdict: 8.8/10

The 2026 Trek Fuel EX 8 Gen 6 is the perfect trail bike for riders who value robust reliability, sophisticated adjustability, and a plush suspension feel above saving a few grams. It is highly capable, endlessly adjustable, and built to shred.
